Canadian cities and towns flourish when they have community public spaces to promote social interaction and physical activity, and provide access to recreational programs and facilities.  Having access to vibrant, interactive spaces is important for health and wellbeing in every corner of our country. Breathing new life into our communities also stimulates local economies, creates jobs, and improves the quality of life for Canadians.

Today, Darrell Samson, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minster of Veterans Affairs, Associate Minister of National Defence and Member of Parliament for Sackville-Preston-Chezzetcook, announced an investment of $30,000 through the Canada Community Revitalization Fund (CCRF) to the Porters Lake Community Service Association. The announcement was made on behalf of the Honourable Ginette Petitpas Taylor, Minister of Official Languages and Minister responsible for ACOA.

This support will allow the Association to resurface the tennis courts at the Porters Lake Community Centre with a new asphalt base for use as both a tennis and a pickleball court. These upgrades will provide the community with an accessible outdoor facility that is open to all ages, strengthening the Centre’s role as a community hub for sports and social activity.

-       The Honourable Ginette Petitpas Taylor, Minister of Official Languages and Minister responsible for ACOA

“The upgrades to the tennis courts at the Porters Lake Community Centre is something that the community has been asking for, and I am pleased our government has chosen to make this investment. The addition of pickleball courts expands the Centre’s recreational offerings and will encourage people of all ages and abilities to come together and have fun.”
-        Darrell Samson, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Veterans Affairs, Associate Minister of National Defence and Member of Parliament for Sackville – Preston – Chezzetcook

“We are very grateful for this funding in order to make our courts open to the public again and provide both pickleball and tennis to the community. Pickleball is the fastest growing sport so to have that in our own backyard will be a great asset. “

Quick facts

  • The Porters Lake Community Service Association maintains the Porters Lake Community Centre, which was established more than 40 years ago to improve the quality of community life in the area. The Centre provides a safe, welcoming space for the community to come together to promote, deliver and participate in recreational, social, leisure and charitable activities.

  • The CCRF was launched in June 2021 and ended on March 31, 2023. The fund provided $500 million over two years to Canada’s regional development agencies (RDAs) to invest in shared and inclusive public spaces to make them safer, greener and more accessible.

  • The Canada Community Revitalization Fund supports two major streams of activity:
o   adapting community spaces and assets so that they may be used safely in accordance with local public health guidelines,
o   building or improving community spaces to encourage Canadians to re-engage in and explore their communities and regions.

  • Canada’s regional development agencies are continuing to deliver targeted support for economic recovery. Application intake is open through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) for the Jobs and Growth Fund, the Aerospace Regional Recovery Initiative, and the Tourism Relief Fund.
