First of its kind infrastructure in Atlantic Canada will house light manufacturing companies

June 27, 2023 · Summerside, Prince Edward Island · Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA)

The City of Summerside continues to be a leader of sustainable energy and green technologies. Through investment in green building practices, eco-friendly municipal services, and innovative partnerships for energy production and research, the city has become a beacon for businesses looking to invest in innovation. The Government of Canada understands that investment in green infrastructure and technology helps diversify the region's economy, provides new business opportunities, reduces carbon emissions, and creates high-skill jobs for Atlantic Canadians.

A model of environmental sustainability

Yesterday, Bobby Morrissey, Member of Parliament for Egmont, announced a total non-repayable investment of $2 million to the City of Summerside through ACOA’s Regional Economic Growth through Innovation (REGI) program for the construction of Atlantic Canada’s first Certified Passive Energy Designed Industrial facility. The 16,000 square foot building, located in the Summerside Business Commons EcoPark, will address current demand for research and manufacturing space, and create up to 39 well-paying positions.

The announcement was made on behalf of the Honourable Ginette Petitpas Taylor, Minister of Official Languages and Minister responsible for ACOA.

The Province of Prince Edward Island is providing a further $1 million in grant support through Innovation PEI.

Today’s announcement further demonstrates the Government of Canada’s Budget 2023 commitment to make transformative investments to build Canada’s clean economy, fight climate change, and create new opportunities for Canadian businesses and workers.
