Federal investment helps increase foot traffic and economic activity for local businesses

September 5, 2025 · Sydney, Nova Scotia · Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA)

The Government of Canada is helping visitors and residents navigate with ease and discover all that the Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM) has to offer.

Today, Mike Kelloway, Member of Parliament for Sydney—Glace Bay, announced a non-repayable contribution of $400,000 to the CBRM for its wayfinding project.

The announcement was made on behalf of the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.

This investment supports the installation of signage, digital kiosks, landscaping, benches, and bike racks in high-traffic areas. The project will guide people from arrival points into the many destinations throughout the municipality, encouraging exploration, longer stays, and stronger connections with local businesses.

Today’s announcement reinforces the Government of Canada’s commitment to building vibrant, inclusive communities and supporting tourism-driven growth across Atlantic Canada.

“As someone who was born and raised here, I know how much pride we take in welcoming people to Cape Breton. This project is about more than signage and benches — it’s about creating a sense of place that helps visitors truly experience the beauty, culture, and hospitality of our island. When people can easily find their way and feel encouraged to stay a little longer, it means more opportunities for our local businesses and stronger connections across our communities. I’m proud to see this investment reflect who we are and what we want to share with the world.”
