Meeting the skills challenge: five key labour market issues facing Atlantic Canada

In this report, Atlantic Provinces Economic Council (APEC) examines Atlantic Canada's labour market as it attempts to cope with weakening demographics. APEC identifies specific challenges confronting the region's labour market in the coming years as employers strive to secure an adequate supply of trained workers.

The report focuses on five key issues: weakening demographic trends; the changing demand for skills; the need to improve workforce utilization; labour market responsiveness to demographic and economic change; and the adequacy of labour market information and policy. The report provides several recommendations to help Atlantic Canada meet the twin challenges of limited labour force growth and a potential skills mismatch. These include: making full use of the region's existing workforce, and equipping stakeholders with sufficient labour market information to make informed choices.
