Something fishy about tobacco smuggler
News Release
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is pleased to share highlights of activities in Atlantic Canada from January to March 2016. CBSA officers protect Canadians by preventing inadmissible people and prohibited goods such as illegal drugs and weapons from entering the country.
Court proceedings continued in January for a traveller charged with smuggling tobacco under the Customs Act. The traveller arrived at the Yarmouth, Nova Scotia port of entry on July 22, 2015 in a commercial truck used for hauling fish. Following an examination, CBSA officers determined that the traveller had concealed 2 kg of tobacco in a sludge tank normally used to hold “fish slurry” when a trailer is transporting fresh or partially frozen fish. The tobacco was seized and the traveller will next appear in Yarmouth Provincial Court on June 28.
