Currency, drugs and guns are the CBSA Southern Ontario Region May highlights
News Release
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officers in the Southern Ontario Region were busy seizing guns, drugs and other commodities smuggled or improperly declared at the border in May. The priorities are to optimize the balance between public safety and the facilitation of international trade and travel.
In May, 16 guns were seized, two restricted and 14 prohibited. There were also 137 drug seizures across the Region.
On May 24, an Ontario resident driving a commercial truck at the Blue Water Bridge was referred for a secondary exam. Four bundles of suspected currency were found in the refrigerator in the sleeper area of the cab. The currency was wrapped in clear plastic and covered with black duct tape. A total of US$117,900 was seized. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police attended and took custody of the currency and the truck and the driver was released.
Quick Facts
- Anyone with information about suspicious cross-border activity is encouraged to call the CBSA Border Watch toll-free line at 1-888-502-9060.
- A referral to secondary is not indicative of wrongdoing. An individual may be sent to secondary for a number of reasons: to account for duty and taxes owing on purchases made, for further documentation processing, and/or for declaration verification.
Quotes
“The 137 drug seizures can be attributed to the excellent work and ongoing attention given to exams performed by our CBSA officers along with their training, experience and the various detection tools.”
