News Release
Travellers paid costly penalties in attempts to smuggle and undervalue their goods.
June 13, 2016 Niagara Falls, Ontario Canada Border Services Agency
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is pleased to share some of the enforcement highlights for April from our border crossings in the Southern Ontario Region.
In April, 10 firearms were seized with six firearms being prohibited and four restricted. Travellers also attempted to smuggle and undervalue the importation of pets, with nine animals seized for either undervaluation or non-report for a total penalty of $7,825.
Quick Facts
- Most undeclared firearms seized by the CBSA at land border ports of entry are personal firearms belonging to travellers arriving from the United States (U.S.), including U.S. residents’ in-transit through Canada to another U.S. destination.
- There are no terms of release for seized prohibited or restricted firearms.
- If you do not declare goods, or if you falsely declare them, the CBSA can seize the goods. This means that you may lose the goods permanently or that you may have to pay a penalty to get them back. Depending on the type of goods and the circumstances involved, CBSA may impose a penalty that ranges from 25% to 80% of the value of the seized goods.
Quotes
“The CBSA places a high priority on the detection and interdiction of undeclared firearms and prohibited weapons. Canadian firearms laws are clear. All travellers must declare any firearms and weapons in their possession when they enter Canada. Anyone who does not declare them upon arrival can be charged.”
Rick Comerford, Regional Director General, Southern Ontario Region
