Woman pleads guilty to two firearms charges in Beaver Creek, Yukon

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), Pacific Region, announced today that a United States (U.S.) resident has pleaded guilty to two charges arising from a firearm seizure in Yukon.
On April 8, 2016, border services officers at Beaver Creek, Yukon discovered and seized an undeclared restricted firearm from Hazel Morris, a 43-year old female U.S. resident travelling to Arizona. The .25-calibre automatic handgun was discovered in a trailer, loaded with a six-round magazine.
On April 15, 2016, Morris pleaded guilty to two offences: paragraph 153(a) of the Customs Act for making a false or deceptive statement and subsection 95(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada for possessing a loaded prohibited firearm.
Morris was sentenced to time served, a $1,250 fine for each count, and a $375 victim surcharge for the Criminal Code offence. She is also prohibited from owning firearms in Canada for ten years.

- From January 1, 2016 to June 1, 2016, there have been a total of 72 firearms seized in the Pacific Region: 17 non-restricted, 21 restricted and 34 prohibited. A high percentage of firearms seized are in transit to and from Alaska.
- When you enter Canada, you must declare all goods, including firearms and weapons, to the CBSA. If you do not, they may be seized and you may face criminal prosecution.
- Travellers are not allowed to bring prohibited firearms – which include many handguns – to Canada under any circumstances. Travellers importing other classes of firearms must have a valid purpose and provide the proper documentation.
