Undeclared firearm seized at the Aldergrove port of entry leads to conviction

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) today announced the conviction of a 66-year-old Florida man who attempted to smuggle a loaded firearm and several prohibited items from the United States (U.S.) to Canada through the CBSA port of entry at Aldergrove, British Columbia.

On April 11, 2016, Joseph Buice, a resident of the United States, attempted to enter Canada at the Aldergrove port of entry with a loaded .22-calibre revolver and two prohibited over-capacity semi-automatic pistol magazines. A warrant was issued and Buice was brought to the Surrey Provincial Court and on June 22, 2016, he pled guilty to the following charges:

• Criminal Code subsection 95(1) – $3,500 fine and $100 victim surcharge;
• Criminal Code subsection 91(2) – 1 day in jail and $100 victim surcharge; and
• Customs Act paragraph 153(a) – $100 victim surcharge.

Buice was also given a ten-year firearm prohibition under section 109 of the Criminal Code.
