Seizure of undeclared weapons leads to charges at St. Stephen port of entry

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is pleased to share highlights of its activities in Atlantic Canada. The CBSA has 50 service locations in this region, which covers four provinces (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador).

The CBSA’s mandate is to facilitate the free flow of persons and goods, while protecting the safety and security of Canadians and ensuring that Canada's borders are not used for illegal activity. The CBSA processed approximately 3 million travellers in the Atlantic Region from April to October 2016.

On October 3, 2016, at the St. Stephen 3rd Bridge port of entry, two travellers were referred for further examination. Border services officers searched their motorhome and found four tasers, five pepper spray canisters, a loaded 9mm handgun and a loaded .357 Magnum, which are prohibited weapons in Canada. The next day, one of the travellers pled guilty to two charges under the Customs Act for failing to report the weapons and providing untrue statements. The judge imposed a total of $2,300 in fines.
