CBSA advises travellers to know the contents of their vehicle
News Release
In November the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) seized a number of weapons at the border in the Southern Ontario Region. Additionally, the Agency stopped motorists who were driving while impaired and seized undeclared currency in excess of CAN$10,000.
On November 15, an American resident was arrested at the Queenston-Lewiston Bridge after failing to declare a prohibited weapon. The item seized was a 'Gas Injection System' knife. During the course of the arrest the subject became resistant while being handcuffed. However, neither the subject nor any officers involved were injured during the incident and no property was damaged. Damon Cawley was charged with failing to report goods, making false statements, and attempting to evade the payment of duties and taxes, and was held for bail.
He plead guilty in St. Catharines provincial court on December 8 and was subsequently convicted and sentenced to pre-sentence custody plus one day. A civil fine of CAN$500 was also assessed against his conveyance for failing to report the prohibited weapon at the port of entry contrary to section 12 of the Customs Act.
The knife was seized by the Crown with no terms of release.
