CBSA Edmonton’s Top Stories in 2017

News Release

As 2017 draws to close, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is highlighting top stories from its border operations in Edmonton.

Primary Inspection Kiosk technology launched
Primary Inspection Kiosk (PIK) technology and the CanBorder – eDeclaration mobile app was launched in partnership with the Edmonton Airport Authority on September 12, 2017. PIKs are next generation technology that will expand current self-service options for international travellers arriving in Canada. The new kiosks streamline services for travellers arriving in Canada by air and allow the CBSA to better manage increasing volumes at the Edmonton International Airport (EIA). The 24 new PIKs at the EIA allow travellers to verify their travel documents, confirm their identity using facial authentication, and complete an on-screen declaration. Those looking to save more time can complete their declaration in advance using the CanBorder –eDeclaration mobile app, and simply scan their quick response code at the kiosk upon arrival.

Edmonton man charged and sentenced in immigration-related fraud case
In May, an Edmonton man plead guilty to three offences in violation of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA). The CBSA charged Seong Yong Park, also known as David Park, with acting as an unauthorized immigration consultant through his company and inducing at least 20 foreign nationals to come to Canada for employment under the Temporary Foreign Worker Program. In June, Park was ordered by an Edmonton Provincial court judge to pay $42,000 in restitution to his victims, and to serve a concurrent community sentence of two years less a day.

CBSA officers save traveller's life
On March 24, Edmonton officers performed CPR on an unconscious male traveller who was suffering a heart attack in the CBSA arrivals area. As officers attended to the man, he became fully responsive and was in recovery as local Emergency Medical Services took over. Later in April, the officers were able to meet the man again, along with members of his family, who expressed their gratitude.
