CBSA investigation leads to seizure of prohibited weapons; 24 charges laid

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is committed to keeping Canada safe from the threat posed by weapons. Today, the CBSA announced that Devon Cutmore is facing 24 charges following the execution of multiple search warrants.
On February 2, 2021, CBSA officers from Ottawa Cargo Services examined a package which contained a replica firearm with pistol cartridges capable of deploying pepper spray. This prompted an investigation by the CBSA’s Northern Ontario Region Criminal Investigations Division.
On May 28, 2021, in partnership with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Lanark, Leeds and Grenville Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU), the CBSA executed multiple search warrants in Lanark and Perth, Ontario.
The searches resulted in the seizure of the following:
- 12 switchblades
- 10 firearms
- 2 Taser Batons
- 3 Tasers
- 12 Taser cartridges
- 1 spring loaded baton
The subject has been charged with the following under the Criminal Code of Canada and the Customs Act:
- s. 104(1)(a) Criminal Code – one count of unlawful importation of prohibited weapons into Canada
- s. 104(1)(a) Criminal Code – two counts of unlawful importation of prohibited devices into Canada
- s. 91(1) Criminal Code – 18 counts of possession of prohibited weapons without lawful authorization
- s. 91(1) Criminal Code – one count of possession of a restricted firearm
- s.159 Customs Act – one count of attempting to smuggle prohibited weapons into Canada
- s.159 Customs Act – one count of attempting to smuggle prohibited devices into Canada
Cutmore’s next court appearance is scheduled for July 19, 2021.
