Minister Dominic LeBlanc Congratulates 2017 Canadian Coast Guard College Graduates

Statements

Canadian Coast Guard Class of 2017

June 3, 2017

SYDNEY, NOVA SCOTIA - The Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, issued the following statement today:

I would like to express my sincere congratulations to the Canadian Coast Guard College’s graduating class of 2017.

It takes a brave, talented and dedicated individual to learn the skills and complete the training that is asked of Coast Guard cadets. Those who successfully make it through the demanding program come out with the skills and knowledge needed to save lives, protect the environment and support safer shipping, day in and day out. Canada thanks them for taking on this incredible responsibility.

Graduates from this College go on to a career that is filled with unparalleled adventure, taking them to some of the most remote parts of our vast and beautiful country, and sometimes even other parts of the world. This is also an amazing time to be joining the ranks of the Coast Guard, as the organization itself enters a period of exciting growth thanks to historic investments, such as the recently announced Oceans Protections Plan, which will see $1.5 billion directly invested into initiatives that will improve marine safety and protect Canada’s oceans and waterways for generations to come. Graduates will be directly impacted, as a large part of that funding will go towards improving Coast Guard vessels and assets; acquiring new tools and technologies; and hiring new employees to further enhance the effectiveness of the Coast Guard’s search and rescue and environmental response capabilities.

On behalf of the Government of Canada, congratulations to all of the 2017 graduates, who now join the other brave women and men proud to call themselves ‘Coasties’. Today’s graduates are part of an organization that ensures the safety of mariners and the environment twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. They are the living embodiments of unsung heroes and I speak on behalf of all Canadians in thanking them for their commitment to service and wishing them well today and throughout their careers with the Canadian Coast Guard.
