Music Lovers are Jazzed as Montreal Enters Festival Mode

MONTRÉAL, June 28, 2017
Today the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage, and the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions (CED), announced that the Government of Canada has provided financial support for the 38th edition of the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, which will take place from June 28 to July 8.
Canadian Heritage has provided $2 million to the 2017 Festival. Of this total, $1 million was provided through the Canada Arts Presentation Fund. This amount will give audiences access to large-scale musical performances. The other $1 million, allocated as part of the Canada 150 program, will be used to organize a great celebration that will bring together Canadians from all backgrounds on July 1 to mark Canada 150 in a truly spectacular way.
The financial aid from CED totals $1,374,750 over two years (2017 and 2018) and comes in the form of a non-refundable contribution under the Quebec Economic Development Program. The support will be used to market and promote the festival in international markets to attract tourists to Montréal. Visitors will bring significant returns that benefit Montréal’s entire population.

The Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, founded in 1980, has become one of the world’s major music festivals. Its impressive lineup includes various types of jazz, blues and world music. The shows, largely presented free of charge, are performed by both well-known and emerging artists.

As part of Montréal's 375th anniversary, the Festival will begin on June 28 by highlighting music that is 100% from Montréal.

To highlight Canada 150, the Place des Festivals will be transformed into a giant discotheque on July 1. Under the musical direction of DJ Champion and Alex McMahon, and with staging by Yann Perreau, Carly Rae Jepsen, Men Without Hats, Muzion, Radio Radio and several others will play some of Canadian dance music’s big hits, accompanied by a group of 24 musicians and 50 dancers.
