OTTAWA, October 28, 2017

David McGuinty, Member of Parliament (Ottawa South), today took part in the official unveiling of the Lord Stanley’s Gift Monument to mark Canada 150, the 125th anniversary of the Stanley Cup and the 100th anniversary of the National Hockey League.

Mr. McGuinty attended the unveiling on behalf of the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage. He was accompanied by Jim Watson, Mayor of Ottawa; George Hunter, Vice-President and Chair of the Board of Lord Stanley Memorial Monument Inc.; and representatives from the Ottawa Senators and the National Hockey League.

The Monument, located at the corner of Sparks and Elgin streets, is sure to delight both residents and visitors as they admire this inspiring work and learn about the importance of the Stanley Cup to our country’s sport heritage.

The unveiling of the impressive Monument is timely. The Government of Canada is in the process of installing a family skating rink on Parliament Hill, in partnership with the Ottawa International Hockey Festival. Canadians and visitors of all ages will have the opportunity to lace up their skates and participate in free skate time, as well as a variety of winter, cultural and sport activities.

Quotes

“Hockey looms large in our collective consciousness, and the Stanley Cup is one of its most powerful symbols. Our government is pleased to have helped bring the Lord Stanley’s Gift Monument to the heart of downtown Ottawa. I invite all Canadians to come out and learn more about the story behind this cherished and iconic trophy.”

—The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage

“Our government is proud to have played a part in this project honouring the Stanley Cup, North America’s oldest and most prestigious team sport trophy. Besides inspiring hockey fans of all ages, this majestic work will be a lasting legacy and a source of pride for generations to come.”

—David McGuinty, Member of Parliament (Ottawa South)

“The Stanley Cup is one of Canada’s most iconic sporting trophies, and it is very fitting that during the country’s 150th anniversary of Confederation, as well as the 125th anniversary of the Cup itself, a monument to Lord Stanley’s gift be unveiled in Canada’s capital at the location of the gift itself. This has been an exciting project since its inception eight years ago, and the Board of Lord Stanley’s Memorial Monument is tremendously grateful to the Government of Canada for its support, through the Department of Canadian Heritage, as well as to our partners the NHL, the Ottawa Senators and the City of Ottawa.”

—George Hunter, Vice-President and Chairman, Lord Stanley Memorial Monument Inc.
