Statement by Minister Joly on Thai Pongal

Statements

OTTAWA, January 14, 2018

Today, Tamils in Canada and around the world gather to celebrate Thai Pongal. Traditionally, the festival is a time to give thanks for the harvest season and gather with friends, family and neighbours.

Celebrated during Tamil Heritage Month, Thai Pongal is an opportunity for all Canadians to reflect on the many contributions of Tamil Canadians to Canadian society and learn more about the rich Tamil language and culture. Diversity is Canada’s greatest strength, and we all benefit from Canada’s spirit of openness and inclusion.

As Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Multiculturalism, I wish everyone celebrating Thai Pongal a wonderful festival with friends and family. Iniya Pongal Nalvazhthukkal.
