Minister Joly Announces Appointments to the Boards of Two National Museums

GATINEAU, February 23, 2018

Today the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage, announced the appointment of 11 part-time members to the boards of trustees of the Canadian Museum of Nature and the Canada Science and Technology Museum. These six women and five men, from such sectors as finance, education and tourism, reflect Canadian diversity and their appointment respects gender parity.

Canadian Museum of Nature

• Nadine Girault (Quebec), four-year term effective March 1, 2018

Ms. Girault, a former banking executive, is a member of the Board of Directors of Investissement Québec and has served on the Board of Directors of the Fonds de solidarité FTQ.

• Linda Nowlan (British Columbia), three-year term effective June 25, 2018

Ms. Nowlan is a lawyer and former diplomat for the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and is a former board member of one of the Fraser Basin Council committees.

• Christian Robin (Manitoba), three-year term effective June 25, 2018

Chair of the Winnipeg Museums Board since 2014, Mr. Robin is a member of the Mayor’s Task Force on Heritage, Culture and the Arts in Winnipeg.

• Judith Pereira (Ontario), three-year term effective June 25, 2018

Ms. Pereira is the managing editor of The Globe and Mail’s Report on Business magazine, a gold medal recipient of the National Magazine Awards and a member of the National Magazine Awards Foundation.

• Ronald Calderoni (Quebec), four-year reappointment effective immediately

A member of the Canadian Museum of Nature’s Board of Trustees since 2012 and former partner of Deloitte LLP, Canada, Mr. Calderoni was formerly a member and president of the Fondation des comptables professionnels agréés du Québec.

• Susan Jane Knott (British Columbia), two-year reappointment effective April 10, 2018

A member of the Canadian Museum of Nature’s Board of Trustees since 2014, Ms. Knott also sits on the Board of Directors of the Royal BC Museum (as chair) and on the Board of the Vancouver Public Library Foundation.

Canada Science and Technology Museum

• A. Christian Idicula (Alberta), four-year term effective March 1, 2018

Mr. Idicula, chair of the Aurora project campaign cabinet for TELUS World of Science in Edmonton, is the president of the Edmonton alumni chapter of the Schulich School of Business.

• Michael A. Geist (Ontario), four-year term effective March 1, 2018

Mr. Geist, a common law professor, received the University of Ottawa Library’s Open Scholarship Award in 2016.

• Paul D. Johnston (Ontario), four-year term effective June 1, 2018

A board member of the Refined Manufacturing Acceleration Process Network since 2014, Mr. Johnston previously served on an advisory group for the Canadian Space Agency.

• Heather Kennedy (Alberta), three-year term effective June 13, 2018

A seasoned engineering professional, Ms. Kennedy is a member of the Calgary Airport Authority board member and has been sitting over the years on various committees at Athabasca University.

• Virginia McLaughlin (Ontario), reappointment for 2 years effective immediately

Ms. McLaughlin has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Canada Science and Technology Museums Corporation for many years, including formerly as Chair of the Governance Committee.

These appointments are the result of the open, transparent and merit-based selection process in place in the Government of Canada.

National museums are independent organizations that are part of the Canadian Heritage portfolio.
