Statement by Minister Duncan on Canada’s First Gold Medal at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games

GOLD COAST, Australia, April 5, 2018
On behalf of the Government of Canada and all Canadians, I would like to extend my most heartfelt congratulations to Taylor Ruck on winning Canada’s first gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games today.
Taylor Ruck, from Kelowna, British Columbia, earned her gold medal in the swimming event on day one of competition. This is Canada’s third medal overall. Not only did Taylor Ruck win the first gold medal for Canada, but she also broke a new world record, making her mark in sport history in Canada and around the world. Today, Canadian athletes made their mark in the pool and showed us what they were capable of doing.
Taylor Ruck’s outstanding performance reminds us that Canada is a leading sport nation. Our Government is proud to provide our athletes with the support they need to compete and win on the international stage.
Today, Canadians from coast to coast to coast are filled with pride and admiration at Taylor Ruck’s incredible talent, drive and strength. I wish our Canadian Team much more success as competition continues in the Gold Coast.
