Statement by Minister Duncan on the Closing of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games

Statement

GOLD COAST, Australia, April 15, 2018

As the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games officially come to a close, I would like to offer my most heartfelt congratulations to our entire Canadian team for their successes at these Games.

Our athletes truly embodied the Commonwealth Games values of humanity, equality and destiny. Many of their outstanding performances resulted in spectacular podium finishes; Canada won 82 medals in total, with 15 gold medals, 40 silver and 27 bronze, placing third in overall medal count.

I would like to thank Team Canada’s biggest fans—their families and friends—for making such a vital contribution to the achievements of our athletes.

Our government is proud to support the Commonwealth Games Association of Canada and the athletes who made up the Canadian team. Along with Canadians from coast to coast to coast, we congratulate them on their remarkable achievements and celebrate their contributions to the world of sport.

The Government of Canada is the single largest contributor to sport in this country, investing in our athletes and their national sport organizations so they have the resources and tools they need to compete and win on the international stage.
