Statement by Minister Rodriguez on Passover, or Pesach

Statement

OTTAWA, April 19, 2019

This evening at sundown, members of Jewish communities in Canada and around the world will mark the start of Passover, or Pesach, one of the most important holidays on the Hebrew calendar.

In celebration of this joyous occasion, families and friends will gather for a ceremonial seder. During the meal, they will retell the story of the Jews’ exodus from slavery in ancient Egypt. Across Canada, people from all walks of life can be inspired by this hopeful story.

Canada is proud to be home to one of the biggest Jewish diasporas in the world. Passover is a time to express our gratitude to Canadian Jews for their remarkable contribution to our society. It is also a perfect opportunity to remember our collective responsibility to fight all forms of anti-Semitism, prejudice, hate and discrimination.

As Minister of Canadian Heritage and Multiculturalism, I extend my best wishes to all Canadians celebrating Passover. Chag Pesach sameach!
