Statement by Minister Chagger on Christmas

Statement

OTTAWA, December 24, 2019

Today, on Christmas Eve, millions of Canadians are gathering with family and friends to celebrate Christmas in ways big and small. While this special day is an important time on the Christian calendar, Christmas is enjoyed by millions of Canadians of many different backgrounds.

Christmas draws on the traditions of different cultures and reflects the diversity of our great country. Decorations adorn our homes, streets and public places, while carols ring out and contribute to the magic and spirit of the holiday season.

Beyond the celebrations, Christmas is also a time to give back to our communities. It is a time of year when many Canadians come together in different ways to help those most in need. As we gather this evening and tomorrow with our families and loved ones, let us also take the time to think about those who are less fortunate.

As Minister of Diversity and Inclusion and Youth, I wish you all a very merry Christmas filled with hope, joy and happiness.
