Minister Qualtrough to Cheer on Team Canada at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games

Media advisory

TOKYO, Japan – From July 22 to July 26, 2021, the Honourable Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Disability Inclusion, will travel to Tokyo to cheer on Team Canada athletes at the opening ceremony of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

After a year-long delay, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games are set to take place from July 23 to August 8 and will include around 11,090 athletes from 206 countries. With the support of the Canadian Olympic Committee and our summer national sport organizations, Canada will field a team of 371 athletes in 33 sports.

The Government of Canada is proud to be the largest single contributor to sport in Canada and has supported Team Canada throughout the pandemic and in its quest for excellence. As part of the Emergency Support Fund for Cultural, Heritage and Sport Organizations, funding was distributed to sport organizations, including National Sport Organizations, Multisport Service Organizations, and Canadian Sport Centres, and to athletes directly to help Team Canada prepare for the Tokyo Games. Through Sport Canada programs, Canadians contribute to the preparation, participation, and celebration of our country’s high-performance athletes before, during and after the Games.

The Government of Canada takes the health and safety of Team Canada very seriously. With the collaboration of Canadian health authorities, we are working with the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Committees to ensure plans for Team Canada’s participation in the Tokyo Games abide by Canadian and Japanese public health guidelines and COVID-19 protocols.

Quote

“I will join all Canadians in proudly cheering on our athletes at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Our athletes have spent years and countless hours working toward this moment, and I encourage all Canadians to unite as one team to cheer them on and share in their success.”

—The Honourable Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Disability Inclusion
