- Archives
- An organization responsible for maintaining records of enduring value (of individuals, families, organizations or communities) and housing archival collections.
- Built heritage
- Built heritage includes the sites, structures and monuments that are recognized for their historic significance. Federal built heritage consists mainly of heritage buildings and national historic sites. These include buildings, battlegrounds, forts, archaeological sites, canals and historic districts.
- Delivery organization
- Young Canada Works delivers its programs through a number of Canadian delivery organizations.
- Diversity
- The variety of identities found within an organization, group or society. Diversity is expressed through factors such as culture, ethnicity, religion, sex, gender, sexual orientation, age, language, education, physical abilities and disabilities, family status or socioeconomic status.
- Employment Equity
- Encourages the establishment of working conditions that are free from barriers, seeks to correct conditions of disadvantage in employment, and promotes the principle that it requires special measures to accommodate differences.
- Equity
- The principle of considering people's unique experiences and differing situations, and ensuring they have access to the resources and opportunities that are necessary for them to attain just outcomes. Equity aims to eliminate disparities and disproportions that are rooted in historical and contemporary injustices and oppression.
- Equity-deserving groups
- A group of people who, because of systemic discrimination, face barriers that prevent them from having the same access to the resources and opportunities that are available to other members of society, and that are necessary for them to attain just outcomes.
- Ethnocultural communities
- A group of people whose members identify with each other, through a common heritage. For the purpose of this definition, ethnocultural communities include Canadians of diverse culture such as, but not limited to African, Arab, Asian, Latin American or mixed heritage.
- Gender
- Gender refers to an individual's personal and social identity as a man, woman, or non-binary person (a person who is not exclusively a man or a woman). Self-identifying gender includes gender identity (what an individual feels internally), and/or gender expression (how an individual presents their gender publicly). An individual’s gender may differ from their sex at birth and may change over time. Some individuals may not identify with a specific gender.
- Heritage Site
- The term "heritage site" includes monuments, architectural heritage, historic and archaeological sites or elements or structures of an archaeological nature, which are of historical, aesthetic, ethnological or anthropological value. Naturally occurring landscapes and related nature conservation organizations are not eligible under this program.
- In-kind contribution

A real contribution to the cost of the proposed project, but is not reimbursable as no monies change hands. Donated goods and services may be considered in-kind contribution if:
- They are essential to project’s success;
- They would otherwise have to be purchased or paid for by the funding recipient;
- They can be measured at fair market value (i.e., in relation to similar goods and services); and
- They are balanced by an equal expense in the project budget.
- Inclusion
- The practice of using proactive measures to create an environment where people feel welcomed, respected and valued, and to foster a sense of belonging and engagement.
- Indigenous communities
- Indigenous communities include First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities.
- Indigenous governing bodies
- First Nation governments, Band Councils or Tribal Councils, Inuit and Métis equivalent governing organizations.
- Indigenous organizations
- Non-profit organizations with a mandate to support Indigenous communities, including the preservation of Indigenous heritage.
- Indigenous youth
- Youth who self-identifies as First Nations, Inuit, Métis and/or urban or non-affiliated Indigenous youth.
- LGBTQ2+
- Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Two-Spirit. This is the acronym used by the Government of Canada to refer to the Canadian community. The symbol "+" represents the wide spectrum of gender identities, sexual orientations and romantic orientations not explicitly named.
- Library
- An organized collection of published materials, including books, serials, sound and video recordings, and other formats.
- Mandatory Employment Related Costs (MERCs)

Employers are required by law to pay the Mandatory Employment Related Costs (MERCs) for their employees. These costs include Employment Insurance premiums, Canada or Quebec Pension Plan contributions, vacation pay, Workers’ Compensation premiums or equivalent liability insurance (if applicable), health insurance and parental insurance premiums in Quebec and Ontario, the Health and Post-Secondary Education Tax in Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Health and Education Levy in Manitoba.

- Museum
- A museum is a not-for-profit, permanent institution in the service of society that researches, collects, conserves, interprets and exhibits tangible and intangible heritage. Open to the public, accessible and inclusive, museums foster diversity and sustainability. They operate and communicate ethically, professionally and with the participation of communities, offering varied experiences for education, enjoyment, reflection and knowledge sharing. - Official language minority communities (OLMC)
- The official language minority communities (OLMC) are the English-speaking communities residing in Quebec and the French-speaking communities residing outside of Quebec.
- Person living with a disability
- Self-identifies as having a disability which includes: agility, hearing, mental health, developmental disabilities, intellectual disabilities, sight, motor skills, language and learning disabilities.
- Recent immigrant
- A recent immigrant has lived in Canada less than 60 months (5 years). This person must be a permanent resident or refugee in Canada and legally entitled to work in Canada.
- Refugee
- Refugee is person on whom refugee status has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act)
- Racialized communities
- Communities of shared heritage who have been historically disadvantaged as a group and may experience discrimination based on colour, culture, ethnicity and/or race. The use of the term "racialized" acknowledges that race is a social construct that negatively impacts a person's social, political and economic life.
- Rural or remote location
- Defined as a population of less than 1,000 {core population} and where no, or very little, access to the services of the closest municipality with a population of 1,000 or more exists.
- Self-Identification
- A person’s own assertion of belonging to a certain group or category of people.
- Youth Employment and Skills Strategy (YESS)
- The Youth Employment and Skills Strategy (YESS) program is part of Employment and Social Development Canada. The program provides funding to organizations to deliver a range of activities that help youth overcome barriers to employment and develop a broad range of skills and knowledge in order to participate in the current and future labour market.
- Youth facing barriers to employment

For example, youth who experience employment barriers include but are not limited to those who self-identify as:
- Involuntary NEET (not in Education, Employment, Training) for at least 6 months
- LGBTQ2+
- Living in a low-income household
- Living with family care responsibilities
- the individual acts as primary caregiver or lone head of household (such as lone parent, or caregiver of dependents)
- Living with a disability
- Recent immigrant and/or refugee
- Residing in a rural or remote location
- Youth who belong to a racialized community
