The Government of Canada held a state funeral for the Right Honourable John Napier Wyndham Turner, who passed away on September 19. The funeral was held on October 6, 2020, at St. Michael’s Cathedral Basilica, in Toronto, in the presence of close family and friends. The ceremony strictly followed public health COVID-19 protocols.

Half-masting of the National Flag of Canada

The Government of Canada proceeded with a half-masting of the National Flag of Canada on all federal buildings and establishments in Canada, including the Peace Tower in Ottawa.

On the evening of September 19, the Great Bell in the Peace Tower tolled 91 times — each ring representing a year in the life of the former politician.

Recital of the Dominion Carillonneur

On October 6, the Dominion Carillonneur offered a recital in memory of the Right Honourable John Turner, live from the Peace Tower in Ottawa, which included Ode to Joy, a favourite hymn of Mr. Turner.
