Funeral service

The funeral was a multi-faith ceremony that took place at Christ Church Cathedral in Ottawa. The cortege included an escort by 24 Mounties on horses while a pipe band played. As the casket was carried from the church, there was a General Salute offered by the Central Band, followed by a 21 gun salute.

Mr. Hnatyshyn was laid to rest in Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa during a private ceremony for the family.

Lying-in-state

Mr. Hnatyshyn lay in state in the Senate Chamber of Parliament from December 22 to 23, 2002.

A 100 person Guard of Honour and the Central Band of Canadian Forces were in place as the funeral procession brought his remains to the motorcade. The Peace Tower bell tolled 68 times, one for each year of his life.
