Upcoming court martial proceedings
As a general rule, court proceedings are open and public. This is known as the open court principle and is protected by the right to freedom of expression guaranteed by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The open court principle serves to instill public confidence in the Canadian justice system, including the military justice system.
Members of the public and media seeking access to a hearing should write to DND.CMA-ACM.MDN@forces.gc.ca and provide the following information in relation to the hearing they would like to attend: case name, hearing date, and in-person or remote attendance. Instructions will be sent by email. Please note that witnesses are usually not permitted in the courtroom until they are needed to give their testimony, which includes connecting remotely. It is strictly forbidden to record legal proceedings without the express permission of the presiding military judge.
