Four drops of tap water have been placed on a carbon steel coupon. Time-lapse photography shows the iron rusting under the four droplets of water. First, orange corrosion forms on the coupon. The corrosion darkens in colour as the droplet of water dries. When the water has dried, a powdery orange residue is left on the coupon.
