Commissioner's update for correctional employees: September 9, 2024
This content is a message to Correctional Service Canada (CSC) staff from CSC's Commissioner.
Our Mission: The Correctional Service of Canada, as part of the criminal justice system and respecting the rule of law, contributes to public safety by actively encouraging and assisting offenders to become law-abiding citizens, while exercising reasonable, safe, secure and humane control.
Our core values: Respect, fairness, professionalism, inclusiveness, and accountability.
It’s already September! September is often a transition month for many as summer holidays come to an end and we take on new routines, including the back to school period.
As you know, today is also the implementation date for the updated common hybrid work model.
I recognize that while most have continued to work on-site full-time in our institutions across the country, this may still represent a change for some of our staff.
At CSC, we are putting in place an anchor day schedule for those working in the office a minimum of 3 days per week. I trust managers are having conversations with their staff to determine these schedules. By the end of the month, they should be inputted into myWorkArrangements.
Thank you all for helping to create a positive environment in which we are all engaged and connected, and where our work continues to be driven by purpose and grounded in our values and ethics.
World Suicide Prevention Day
Tomorrow is World Suicide Prevention Day. This year’s theme is “Changing the Narrative on Suicide” to emphasize how important it is to abandon stigmas surrounding suicide and create a more compassionate and supportive space to talk about its realities.
The feelings that can lead to suicide may be exacerbated by stigma. This can be particularly challenging within the environments of CSC institutions and the contexts in which we work.
The Government of Canada recently released Canada’s first:
National Suicide Prevention Action Plan
The Action Plan lays the foundation for increased collaboration and engagement with partners across the country to strengthen Canada’s response to suicide.
Prevention and intervention for suicide and self-injury is a continuous priority for CSC.
Faces of CSC

“Our languages in ACTION!”
September 12 is Official Languages Day, an opportunity to promote Canada’s two official languages and to celebrate our rich linguistic heritage.
This year’s theme, “Our languages in ACTION,” explores and promotes our official languages. The theme also inspires commitment and collaboration to support and promote the cohesion of our communities in a rapidly changing world.
Take advantage of Official Languages Day to celebrate English and French together. I invite you to participate in events to highlight the crucial role languages play in everyday life, as well as the tangible impact they have in the arts, sciences, entrepreneurship, sports, culture and more.
I encourage you to participate in the following virtual event held on September 12, 2024, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. (EDT):
Thank you all for the work you do every day in service to Canadians.
Every job is a self-portrait of the person who did it. Autograph your work with excellence.
