Commissioner's update for correctional employees: December 2, 2024
This content is a message to Correctional Service Canada (CSC) staff from CSC's Commissioner.
Our mission: The Correctional Service of Canada, as part of the criminal justice system and respecting the rule of law, contributes to public safety by actively encouraging and assisting offenders to become law-abiding citizens, while exercising reasonable, safe, secure and humane control.
Our core values: Respect, fairness, professionalism, inclusiveness, and accountability.
Our thoughts are with our staff at Beaver Creek Institution in Gravenhurst, Ontario, who are dealing with difficult conditions due to a recent snowstorm. The town is currently under a state of emergency and operations at the institution are impacted.
My thanks to everyone there for their work to ensure the safety of their colleagues, inmates and the public. I hope you can return to regular operations very soon.
International Day of Persons with Disabilities
On December 3 we celebrate International Day of Persons with Disabilities. This day raises awareness and promotes the rights and well-being of people with disabilities. Here at CSC, our 2022 to 2025 Accessibility Plan identifies, seeks to eliminate and prevent accessibility barriers within our organization.
International Volunteer Day
December 5 is International Volunteer Day. Please join me in celebrating our amazing volunteers, including the many volunteer members of our advisory committees. They dedicate their time to help support our rehabilitation and reintegration efforts.
Their commitment and compassion are instrumental in helping us achieve our mandate. From helping with temporary absences to enhancing and diversifying life skills, our volunteers are collaborators helping to making communities a better place. This day is all about recognizing them and all the important work they do.
National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women
December 6 marks National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. On this day, we remember the lives of the 14 young women who were murdered at the Polytechnique Montréal on December 6, 1989, in an anti-feminist attack. Misogyny in Canada still exists. To keep their memory alive, we must work to honour these women and to seek to do better for the lives of all women in our society.
We must work together and reaffirm our commitment to fight against gender-based violence. Let us be part of the conversation and the solution. On Friday, I encourage you to wear a white ribbon to honour the victims of this tragedy or attend a vigil in your community.
New “Prisons Inside/Out” Episode: Restorative Justice

As we recently recognized Restorative Justice Week, I want to share that new episodes of our podcast “Prisons Inside / Out” are now available.
In one episode, we hear the story of Angie, a victim of crime and participant in the Restorative Opportunities Program.
After her brother was tragically murdered, Angie began her healing journey with the support of a Restorative Opportunities program mediator. Listen to her story, in her own words, to learn how she found answers through this empowering experience.
In another episode, we talk with Serge, a mediator and Sean, a chaplain, who offer support to victims and offenders through the program.
