Commissioner's update for correctional employees: February 10, 2025
This content is a message to Correctional Service Canada (CSC) staff from CSC's Commissioner.
Our mission: The Correctional Service of Canada, as part of the criminal justice system and respecting the rule of law, contributes to public safety by actively encouraging and assisting offenders to become law-abiding citizens, while exercising reasonable, safe, secure and humane control.
Our core values: Respect, fairness, professionalism, inclusiveness, and accountability.
On February 15, our iconic red and white flag turns 60!

It’s never been more important to come together to celebrate all that it represents. Our Canadian flag is recognized around the world and it’s a source of great pride and a symbol of unity.

Break the Cycle: Volunteers offer Black offenders the tools to heal and give back
As part of our celebration of Black History Month, I wanted to highlight the impressive and important work being done in the Quebec Region with the Break the Cycle initiative.
This volunteer-led initiative gives Black offenders the opportunity to give back to their community as part of their healing and rehabilitation journey.
Break The Cycle takes offenders from minimum security institutions on escorted temporary absences to volunteer at their church’s local food bank. While the initiative is open to everyone, the focus is to offer culturally adapted rehabilitation solutions for Black offenders.
I encourage you to read more and share with your colleagues in our latest “Let’s Talk” article:
For Black History Month, our Communications team has written Let’s Talk articles featuring Black leadership at CSC for publishing every Friday throughout February. I invite you to read these articles to meet them and please share with your colleagues to spread the word about how they are advancing positive change at CSC.
Anti-racism, diversity, equity and inclusion (ARDEI) Corner
As you may know, significant strides have been made in recognizing and supporting our staff and creating a more inclusive workplace. Nevertheless, it may be distressing to hear recent news about DEI in the broader environment.
I want to take this moment to reaffirm that CSC remains committed to upholding equity, diversity and inclusion in our organization. Creating an environment where everyone feels valued, respected and empowered isn’t just the right thing to do, it leads to stronger teams, greater innovation and a sense of belonging for all.
As CSC employees, I encourage all of you to take pride in our diversity and recommit to ensuring that equity, inclusion and belonging is at the forefront of your work environment.
As the author, Pat Wadors, said: “When we listen and celebrate what is both common and different, we become wiser, inclusive and better as an organization.”
If you want to explore opportunities for learning and development, your Employment Equity and Diversity Committees are here to help and have funds available to support initiatives.
