Commissioner's update for correctional employees: March 17, 2025
This content is a message to Correctional Service Canada (CSC) staff from CSC's Commissioner.
Our mission: The Correctional Service of Canada, as part of the criminal justice system and respecting the rule of law, contributes to public safety by actively encouraging and assisting offenders to become law-abiding citizens, while exercising reasonable, safe, secure and humane control.
Our core values: Respect, fairness, professionalism, inclusiveness, and accountability.
As you may have heard, Canada's new prime minister, Mark Carney, was sworn in last week alongside members of the new Cabinet. The Honourable David J. McGuinty will continue his role as Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness. I look forward to continuing to work with him on our mandate, as we continue to keep our communities and institutions safe.

Faces of CSC-Nikki Smith
Nikki Smith’s mother, Rae Gateley, was one of the first female correctional supervisors (now known as a correctional manager) in a male institution in Canada. Nikki followed in her mother’s footsteps and the two became one of the only known mother-daughter duos in the history of Kingston Penitentiary.

Anti-Racism, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Corner
I want to share an important resource offered by TBS’s Task Force for Black Public Servants. A second official language training will now be available for Black public servants.
This learning platform was put together as part of the Action Plan for Black Public Servants. Following consultations, many expressed that bilingualism remains a barrier to career advancement.
This self-paced program will strengthen language skills and unlock new opportunities. It includes comprehensive training modules in writing, reading comprehension, and oral comprehension.
International Francophonie Day
March 20 is International Day of La Francophonie. At CSC, we proudly celebrate the French language represented by our employees and the communities we serve. French, as one of Canada's official languages, plays a vital role in our shared heritage. Let's come together to celebrate the French culture that has united us for generations.
I encourage you to participate in a virtual concert organized by Canadian Heritage and the Dialogue Network on March 20, 2025, from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. (EDT). Tune into the sounds of French-Canadian artists as we celebrate the richness and diversity of Francophonie culture.

Year-End Performance Agreements
As the end of the fiscal year is approaching, I want to remind you that you have until April 4 to complete your Year-End Performance Agreements. These performance discussions between employees and managers provide you with important feedback on your contributions to CSC.
I strongly believe in having open and constructive discussions. It is a time to reflect on achievements, challenges, and progress. This is also an opportunity to reinforce our values, clarify expectations, and support each person in reaching their full potential.

Thank you for your hard work and your commitment to fostering a positive work environment.
