Commissioner's update for correctional employees: April 14, 2025

Our mission: The Correctional Service of Canada, as part of the criminal justice system and respecting the rule of law, contributes to public safety by actively encouraging and assisting offenders to become law-abiding citizens, while exercising reasonable, safe, secure and humane control.

Our core values: Respect, fairness, professionalism, inclusiveness, and accountability.

This week marks a painful anniversary for Canadians and for CSC. Five years ago, 22 people were killed during a mass tragedy in Nova Scotia on April 18 and 19. Amongst those who lost their lives where two of our valued employees, Alanna Jenkins and Sean McLeod, both Correctional Managers.

On this sad anniversary, we continue to honor and remember their lives. Our thoughts are with their families, friends, colleagues and all those who continue to be impacted by this tragedy.

I know this subject can be difficult for many of us. I want to remind you that resources are available to you, if you wish to speak to someone. EAP referral agents are there to listen - the Employee Assistance Program is available not only to employees, but also to eligible family members - 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Inmate voting

As you may know, inmates will have the opportunity to exercise their right to vote on April 16, 2025, by special ballot.

Each of our institutions has a liaison officer who will coordinate the registrations, organize polling stations, and return all ballots to Elections Canada. I know that this can require a lot of work for some of you. I want to say thank you to everyone involved in planning for voting day and coordinating registrations.

I also want to remind you that if inmates come to you with questions, please connect them to the elections liaison officer at the institution.

Easter long weekend

Lastly, this weekend is the Easter long weekend, so I wanted to wish everyone a Happy Easter to those celebrating. For those who will be working over the long weekend to maintain our operations, I realize you’ll be away from your families during this holiday time. I thank you again for your hard work, commitment, and dedication to keeping Canadians safe.

My thanks to each and every one of you for the important work you do every day.
