Commissioner's update for offenders and their families: September 23, 2024
September is Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Awareness Month. FASD is a condition that affects the brain and body of people who were exposed to alcohol in the womb.
Each individual with FASD is unique and has their own challenges and strengths. For example, challenges might include difficulties with learning, memory, and communication skills, as well as physical health issues. Strengths may include generosity and artistic talent.
If you want to learn more about FASD, your Health Services staff is there to help.
The Terry Fox Run is held every September in honour of Canadian cancer activist, Terry Fox, whose goal was to raise money for cancer research. His personal experience with cancer led him to start the inspiring Marathon of Hope in April 1980. Four months before his death, he reached his ultimate goal of raising $1 for every Canadian.
When Terry was running across Ontario, he visited Beaver Creek Institution and shared dinner with staff and inmates on his birthday. Mr. Tom Malone of Food Services baked Terry a beautiful birthday cake. Staff, inmates, and the larger community, raised $14,000 for Terry’s cause. The old cafeteria, where the dinner took place, is now called the Terry Fox Room. To this day, CSC continues to remember Terry and his legacy.
“I set daily goals for myself, and it’s really important that I achieve them. I need to have a daily sense of accomplishment. I know if I fall short of those goals that I will never finish.” - Terry Fox
