Commissioner's update for offenders and their families: December 16, 2024
This will be my last weekly message of the year. December is a time to celebrate many different cultures. This holiday season, some of you may be recognizing:
- Yule, a Pagan festival celebrating the winter solstice - December 21 to January 1.
- Hannukah is known as the Jewish Festival of Lights - December 25 to January 2.
- Christmas is a Christian celebration - December 25.
- Kwanzaa is celebrated by African Canadians - December 26 to January 1.
- Ōmisoka is the Japanese New Year celebration - December 31.
- New Year’s Day is the first day of the calendar year - January 1, 2025.
I would like to remind you that chaplains and resources are available at all our sites to assist you in practicing your faith.
At the same time, this time of year can be difficult for some. I encourage you to connect with your loved ones. If you are struggling or feel the need for support, please reach out to someone in Health Services. Many resources are available to you. I also encourage you to give thanks, reflect and participate in activities available to you.
The Government of Canada recently announced a temporary GST/HST break for all Canadians on some grocery items. This tax break will be in effect until February 15. Please note that canteens will be making adjustments to reflect this temporary break on qualifying items.
I wish you a safe and healthy new year.
