Commissioner's update for offenders and their families: January 15, 2025

Prior to your incarceration, did you work in a skilled trade? Or have you ever had an interest in pursuing an apprenticeship in the trades?

I want to remind you that CORCAN has opportunities to support you as an apprentice in earning hours that could go towards a Red Seal certification, which shows that you have the knowledge required for that trade.

Across the country, CORCAN offers apprenticeships in different trades such as welding, carpentry, electrician, plumber, automotive options, cook, and others.

For example, at Collin’s Bay Institution, the CORCAN welding apprenticeship program offers in-class instruction, as well as hands-on training to help you earn certificates and prepare you for employment.

These are great opportunities for you to invest in yourself. CORCAN teaches you employment and employability skills. Being productively occupied during you incarceration is important.  I encourage you to talk to your Case Management Team to find out what programs are offered at your institution.

If you have questions, you can also get in touch with the staff at CORCAN at your institution for more information.
