Commissioner's update for offenders and their families: January 27, 2025

Today is Family Literacy Day. Connecting with your family through reading is a great and creative way to build bonds. There are outside community supports that can help you by offering different book reading options. You can even record yourself reading a story to your child and create a special moment they can revisit anytime.

To learn more, speak to your Social Program Officer or anyone on your case management team about what is offered.

I was very proud to hear about a recent charitable donation by a group of CORCAN employees and inmates from Atlantic Institution. Over the past few years, the CORCAN mattress shop had accumulated leftover supplies. The employees and inmates used the extra material to make mattresses which they donated to homeless shelters in New Brunswick. In total, they were able to donate 82 mattresses.

What a great initiative and way to give back to our communities. Thank you to everyone who participated and helped those in need.

Do you have a community support that has been an important part of your journey? CSC's third virtual Volunteer Appreciation Gallery is a great way to say thanks. Share your art or poetry to show the positive impact they have in your life. Your work could be featured on CSC's website during National Volunteer Week in April 2025.

You can talk to your Social Program Officer or other staff for more information. The deadline for submissions is March 7, 2025.
