Commissioner's update for offenders and their families: February 10, 2025

This content is a message to federal offenders and their families from Correctional Service Canada's (CSC's) Commissioner.

I want to share that the 2024 CORCAN Wildfire Safety Program in the Prairie Region has been a success.

In 2024, inmates from Saskatchewan Penitentiary, Willow Cree Healing Lodge, the Regional Psychiatric Centre, and Okimaw Ohci Healing Lodge were each given the opportunity to receive introductory level wildfire training. This training taught the participants the basic skills needed to provide support, mop-up, and patrol operations once wildfires have been contained.

The course itself includes four days of in-class theory and one day of practical training. Skills gained by the offenders during the course include:

Year after year, the frequency, size, and severity of wildfires is increasing because of the climate crisis. The Wildfire Safety Program was created to allow offenders to gain relevant skills and training to help with future employment.
