Chaplaincy services: Religious and spiritual care of federal offenders
Have you considered offering religious and spiritual services as part of a multidisciplinary team, within a Canadian federal penitentiary? We’re always looking for qualified Chaplains and/or Chaplaincy volunteers to help support these services for federal offenders.
The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) provides support and services to federal offenders of all religious backgrounds, as required under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Chaplaincy services are a best practice to ensure all offenders can practice their faith while in the care and custody of CSC.
Chaplains within CSC are:
- employed by Bridges of Canada (www.bridgesofcanada.com)
- qualified, professional, official representatives (i.e. ordination or equivalent religious designation) from diverse religious traditions mandated to provide chaplaincy services for federally sentenced offenders
- knowledgeable about working in an interfaith context as part of an interdisciplinary team
- open to accompanying all persons in search of meaning, fulfilment and respect for human dignity, and are as available to people who have no religious affiliation as they are to people who have one
- holistic in their spiritual approach to the needs of the people they serve, as they care for the whole person in the context of their relationships with themselves, with others and possibly with the Divine
- informed about Canadian religious and spiritual trends and practices
Preparation for Serving as a Chaplain with CSC
As you prepare to serve in your own faith community, look for education and experience opportunities that will contribute to your knowledge and skills to:
- Engage with persons of all faiths or no faith
- Work as part of a multidisciplinary team in a diverse and inclusive institutional context
- Work in an interfaith context
- Understand and respond to current Canadian trends in religion, spirituality and practice
- Become familiar with the principles of restorative justice
