Video transcript
My job as a Correctional Manager is to make sure I manage the staff that is on my unit to make them good and better officers and to help them make decisions. If there's some time there's any kind of conflict in making a decision, they come in, we talk about it and come with a solution that works for everybody.
Hi, my name is Toyobor and I'm a Correctional Manager.
So I started in 1997, so this I'm just working on my 29 years of service.
So basically what we do is just we manage the unit. I manage this unit with about 12 officers and 106 inmates. So on a given day, we make sure that the inmates are okay, that they're doing what they're supposed to be doing, doing their programs, and also make sure that they are safe.
I find in this profession is that you have to really work with your staff and give them the tools to work with. Assist them in any way they want and let them make decisions. And then we talk about it if there's anything that is not working.
So I was born and raised in Nigeria. My father was big in the Nigerian Police Force.
So when we migrated here, I had the older brother who first started working here and then I have another brother who works at Winnipeg Police and I have a brother who works at the Remands and so I decided to join in.
So now I have first had my youngest son who came here through the FSWEP student and then my older son graduated December of last year and he's now working as a Correctional Officer I in a maximum unit. So this is a family business and we enjoy doing it, we take pride in doing it because we enjoy giving back and just working and trying to make a difference.
I'm very proud of my job I do in CSC and the opportunity of working in CSC.
Like a lot of people when you tell them it's not a job to us its a career. We come here to better ourself. I went from a Correctional Officer I to a II and then I became a Correctional Manager, so there's that opportunity to advance your career.
So I do enjoy my job very, very well and everybody will tell you that. I could think of when I was doing recruitment, I wasn't supposed to be coming to the site but I choose to come to the site all the time to work with the people. I enjoy meeting the people. I rather work and meet people and talk to people, than sit in that room doing stuff. So I really enjoy my job here.
