Death of an inmate at Matsqui Institution medium security unit

November 13, 2015 – Abbotsford, British Columbia – Correctional Service Canada

On November 13, 2015, Thomas Robert Elton, an inmate from the medium security unit at Matsqui Institution was found unresponsive in his cell.

Staff members immediately began performing CPR and emergency services were called. The inmate could not be resuscitated.

At the time of his death, Mr. Elton, 60 years old, had been serving a life sentence.

The inmate’s next of kin have been notified of his death.

As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, the police and the coroner have been notified, and Correctional Service Canada will review the circumstances of the incident.
