Lockdown and search at Springhill Institution

February 17, 2016 - Springhill, New Brunswick – Correctional Service Canada

On February 16, 2016 at about 7:24 p.m., a lockdown was put in place at Springhill Institution, a medium security federal institution, to allow staff to conduct a search of the institution.

The search was ordered to ensure the safety and security of the institution, its staff and inmates. Visits have been suspended until the search is completed. Normal operations will resume as soon as it is considered safe to do so.

In order to improve practices aimed at preventing this type of incident, the Correctional Service of Canada will continue to review the circumstances surrounding this incident and take the appropriate measures.
