Assault of an inmate at Atlantic Institution

March 30, 2016 – Renous, New Brunswick – Correctional Service Canada

On March 29, 2016, at about 9:50 p.m., an inmate was victim of an assault at Atlantic Institution, a maximum security federal institution. The injured inmate was immediately evaluated by staff members and transported to an outside hospital to receive treatment.

The Blackville detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the institution are presently investigating the incident.

No staff members or other inmates were injured during this incident.

The assailants have been identified and the appropriate actions have been taken.

In order to improve practices aimed at preventing this type of incident, the Correctional Service of Canada will review the circumstances of the incident and take the appropriate measures.
