Death of an inmate at Edmonton Institution

May 25, 2016 – Edmonton, Alberta– Correctional Service Canada

On May 25, 2016, Jason Clarke Croft, an inmate at Edmonton Institution was found unresponsive in his cell.

Staff members immediately began performing CPR and emergency services were called. The offender was taken to the Fort Saskatchewan Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 11:03 a.m.

At the time of his death, Mr. Croft, 38 years old, had been serving a sentence of 11 years, 7 months and 10 days, since April 29, 2013, for Possession of Property Obtained by Crime, Possession Scheduled I/II Substance for Purpose of Trafficking, Conspire to Commit Indictable Offence, Traffic in Schedule I/II Substance, Possession Schedule I/II Substance for Purpose Traffic X2, Traffic in Schedule I/II Substance X2, Fail to Comply with Conditions X2, Possession Weapon for Purpose Trafficking X2 and Possession of Weapon Contrary to Prohibition Order.

The inmate’s next of kin have been notified of his death.

As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, the police and the medical examiner have been notified, and Correctional Service Canada will review the circumstances of the incident.
