End of lockdown at Springhill Institution

News Release

The lockdown put in place at Springhill Institution on July 17, 2017 has ended. The institution will be returning to its normal operations over the next few days.

The inmate disturbance was resolved the evening of July 17 thanks to the work of Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) staff, who managed the incident quickly and safely.

All inmates involved in the disturbance were returned to their cells. One inmate was treated at an outside hospital and has since returned to the institution. Two correctional officers were assaulted during the disturbance but did not require medical treatment and are receiving the necessary support. No damage to the institution has been reported.

An exceptional search was completed to ensure the safety and security of staff and offenders.

CSC will conduct an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Visits to the institution have resumed.
