Lockdown and search at Dorchester Penitentiary – Medium-Security Unit

November 17, 2017 – Dorchester, New Brunswick – Correctional Service Canada

On November 13, 2017, at about 1 p.m., a lockdown was put in place at Dorchester Penitentiary, a multi-level security federal institution, to allow staff to conduct a search of the institution following an inmate assault.

The search was ordered to ensure the safety and security of the institution, its staff and inmates. Visits have been suspended until the search is completed. Normal operations will resume as soon as it is considered safe to do so.

Visitors who have already planned a visit are asked to contact the institution directly.

In order to improve practices aimed at preventing this type of incident, the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) will continue to review the circumstances surrounding this incident and take the appropriate measures.
