Lockdown at Springhill Institution

News Release

November 18, 2017 – Springhill, Nova Scotia – Correctional Service Canada

On November 16, 2017, at about 4:30 p.m., a lockdown was put in place at Springhill Institution, a medium security federal institution, as a precaution while staff investigate information that was received about potential contraband.

The safety and security of the institutions is the Correctional Service of Canada's (CSC) primary concern. Normal operations will resume as soon as it is considered safe to do so.

Visits have been suspended for the weekend.

CSC is committed to preventing the entry of contraband into its institutions. Our efforts help to ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone. CSC also works in partnership with the police to take action against those who attempt to introduce contraband into correctional institutions.

In order to improve practices aimed at preventing this type of incident, CSC will continue to review the circumstances surrounding this incident and take the appropriate measures.
