Death of an inmate from Dorchester Penitentiary

April 24, 2023 – Dorchester, New Brunswick – Correctional Service Canada

On April 22, 2023, an inmate from Dorchester Penitentiary died while in our custody of apparent natural causes. The individual’s name has been anonymized to comply with a court-ordered publication ban to protect the identity of the victims.

At the time of death, the inmate had been serving a sentence of 14 years, 5 months and 17 days for acts of gross indecency, attempted rape, careless use/storage of firearm, and assault causing bodily harm, amongst others, since November 24, 2015.

The inmate’s next of kin have been notified.

As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) will review the circumstances. CSC policy requires that the police and the coroner be notified.
