Death of an inmate from Joyceville Institution - Assessment Unit

News release

January 18, 2024 –Joyceville, Ontario – Correctional Service Canada

On January 17, 2024, Christopher Jacobs, an inmate in the Assessment Unit at Joyceville Institution, died while in our custody.

At the time of death, the inmate had been serving a 3 year, 7 month, 18 day sentence, which commenced on October 6, 2023, for possession of firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized (X4), importing or exporting firearms/ammunition knowing it is unauthorized (X2) and offence under Customs/Excise Act (X2).

The inmate’s next of kin have been notified.

As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) will review the circumstances. CSC policy requires that the police and the coroner be notified.
