Canada's ambitious economic agenda is recognized around the world as a model of generosity and shared prosperity. That's because we listen to Canadians, and we are committed to the notion that when you have an economy that works for the middle class, you have a country that works for everyone.
In a Google Hangout with students from across the country held at Ottawa's La Cité collégiale, Minister of Finance Bill Morneau and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance François-Philippe Champagne today launched the Government of Canada's pre-budget consultations by asking Canadians to share their ideas on how to strengthen the middle class and ensure Canada is well positioned in the global economy of tomorrow.
Consultations for Budget 2016 had the highest turnout on record, engaging more than 250,000 Canadians. This year, the Government aims to reach even more Canadians, and chose the earliest consultation launch date ever so that as many people as possible can take part in the budget process.
In the coming days and weeks, Minister Morneau and Parliamentary Secretary Champagne will be travelling across Canada to meet with Canadians to discuss how the Government can bring together the best our country has to offer to ensure a strong, confident and more resilient middle class. The consultations will complement the work of the Government's Advisory Council on Economic Growth, which has been helping shape the Government's growth strategy.
All Canadians are invited to submit their ideas online and via Twitter, using the hashtag #Budget2017.
